Veterans Assistance Programs

 
 

Our team at Amada Senior Care Northern New Jersey are experts in helping clients take advantage of programs and services that make the costs of care more manageable. One program our clients have found to be especially useful is the VA Aid and Attendance benefit, which provides monthly financial support to wartime veterans or surviving spouses who require help with activities of daily living. Who is Eligible for VA Aid and Attendance?

1. Military Service
  • To qualify for Aid and Attendance, a veteran must have served a minimum of 90 days’ active duty, with at least one day served during a period of war. Surviving spouses of these veterans are also eligible for benefits.
  • Veterans with dishonorable discharges do not qualify.
2. Personal Care Needs
  • Recipients of Aid and Attendance must need assistance with activities of daily living from another person.
  • These activities may include support due to cognitive impairment, bathing, eating, walking, and others.
3. Income
  • The majority of an applicant’s income must currently be spent on care.
  • The percentage of income spent on care is the main factor in the amount of the benefit applicants receive, up to a maximum amount.
4. Assets
  • The VA determines a limit for the amount of assets each applicant may possess to be eligible for benefits.
  • Age and financial need are key factors in the determination of this limit.

VA benefits can help seniors retain the highest quality of care or afford the community of their choice. Aid and Attendance benefits are:

  • Tax free.
  • Paid monthly directly to the claimant by the US Treasury.
