Four Major Points of Aid and Attendance Eligibility:

1. Military Service
  • Vet must have served 90 days active duty with at least one day being during a time of war.
  • Veteran must not have a dishonorable discharge.
2. Personal Care Needs
  • Claimant must currently need help with activities of daily living from another person.
  • Daily living activities can include feeding, bathing, dressing, transferring, etc.
3. Income
  • Veteran must currently be spending the majority of their income on expenses related to their care.
  • How much of their income they spend on care determines how much of the benefit they will receive; up to the maximum amount.
4. Assets
  • The veteran’s total assets must be below the amount set by the Veteran’s Administration.
  • Age and level of financial need determine the amount of assets a claimant can have.

The aid and attendance benefit allows you to have financial flexibility when deciding what the best care options are for your unique situation.

  • With the benefit, you can afford more hours of home care or a better community.
  • So long as you maintain eligibility, the benefit is paid monthly and will never need to be paid back.
