I am very pleased to relate my experience with AMADA Senior Care in assisting me in finding a really outstanding senior living retirement community. In late 2016, following foot surgery, it became clear to me that, due to my COPD disorder and my physical limitations from the sur-gery and pre-existing back problems, it was inadvisable me to continue to live in my three-story townhouse. I decided to look into senior living and retirement communities but had no idea where to begin. My son was friends with Nick Petiti, one of the owners of AMADA Senior Care, who, together with his wife, Rachel, and Tracy Denton, came to visit me to discuss avail-able senior living options.
Tracy Denton, an AMADA Senior Care associate, became my personal contact to explore the senior life-style options in the Birmingham area, and personally escorted me to several differ-ent and unique communities nearby and was able to point out and explain in great detail the ad-vantages and drawbacks of the several communities we visited and to also introduce me to the representatives of each of these facilities. She was of immense help in enabling me to narrow my search to three particular communities, and was greatly instrumental in helping me make my final determination.
Tracy arranged a lunch meeting with the residential community director and another repre-sentative at Somerby Senior Living Community in Hoover, at which meeting I made the deci-sion that Somerby was the right fit right for me. Tracy then helped me further in negotiating the arrangements for my decision to reside at Somerby, and I moved in in January, 2017. I am totally happy and excited about my choice and am truly grateful to AMADA Senior Care for all the helpful advice, hands-on assistance and personal commitment to my ability to make the appropriate and well-informed decision about my excellent living situation.

My 91 year old mother, who lives in an independent apartment at a local senior community, fell and broke her hip recently. Once she left rehab, she needed more help than respite care could provide. Since we had never, been through this before, you can imagine our range of emotions. After calling Nick and Rachel, we immediately felt the load had been lifted off our shoulders! They put us at ease and patiently answered our many questions. We then met with Nick and Tracey, the Senior Care consultant. What struck me straightaway was their utmost respect for my mother, genuine concern for her and her care, and knowledge. They even went the extra mile to have my mother's caregivers train with her physical therapist so they would understand her hip precautions! Nick also pointed out that my mother's long term health care policy would help with her costs and directed me to ask the right questions when I spoke with her provider. Rachel and her wonderful team handled the claims paperwork, which made the process so easy for us. After dealing with this long term care provider by myself for my father a few years ago, I cannot emphasize enough how much I appreciate the help. Speaking of help, the caregivers Tracey paired with my mother are literally angels on earth! Their patience, understanding, attentiveness, and quality of care are truly exceptional!! Even when they had to miss a day (which was very rarely), the substitute caregivers were just as wonderful.Tracey alaways came to introduce them to my mother and made sure my mother was comfortable with them. Throughout this entire process, Tracey popped in occasionally to check in with my mother to see if everything was going to her liking. The communication network among the office staff and caregivers with my mother and me has been absolutely amazing! After nearly four months of their compassionate assistance, my mother is now once again living independently in her apartment. It is a bittersweet victory for her because although independence was always her goal, she misses the companionship of the dear caregivers who have become family! We also know they played a huge part in my mother becoming independent again. We can never thank them, the staff, Tracey, Rachel, and Nick for all they have done for us!!! They have been such a blessing and it is a great comfort knowing they are there for us whenever we need them. We, too, would highly recommend Amada Senior Care to everyone!!
I didn't know what to do until I called Amada Senior Care. My brother had moderate dementia and needed help with getting to and from doctor's appointments and general daily activities. Nick and Rachel helped us understand the services their team offers and other resources. We needed immediate help but were unsure about how to pay for it. Nick and Rachel walked us through the possibility of Veteran's benefits for home care. There are many reasons a client may consider making the transition to senior housing, and knowing what motivates them helps us guide them to the environment most likely to meet their needs. Perhaps he or she wants to reduce responsibilities and live among peers in a social environment. If this is the case, we may recommend an assisted living community. If the search for senior housing is prompted by an increase in the level of assisted or skilled senior care a client needs, we may suggest a nursing home where they will receive more help with activities of daily living and have close access to complex medical services.

Veterans Assistance Programs
At Amada Birmingham, we have learned that many senior veterans and their families are not aware of all of the programs and benefits out there to help them cover the cost of care. One program that could provide significant financial assistance is the VA Aid and Attendance benefit, which awards monthly funds to wartime veterans and surviving spouses to pay for help with activities of daily living. Eligibility for VA Aid and Attendance:
- Aid and Attendance benefits are specifically for wartime veterans and their surviving spouses.
- Veterans must have served at least one day of active duty during wartime, and a total of 90 days’ active duty overall. Veterans with dishonorable discharge do not qualify for this benefit.
- Claimants must currently need help from another person to complete activities of daily living.
- ADLs may include bathing, eating, meal preparation, and other non-medical needs.
- Qualified applicants currently spend the majority of their income on care.
- Benefits are awarded according to the percentage of income spent on care, up to a set maximum.
- Claimants’ assets must not exceed a limit set by the VA.
- Age and financial need are key factors in the determination of this limit.
Aid and Attendance benefits may significantly increase the senior care options available to a wartime veteran or surviving spouse. These benefits are:
- Paid directly to claimants by the US Treasury every month.
- Awarded in addition to military pensions.
- Not required to be repaid as long as claimant is eligible.
- Not taxed.
